Camp Ignite is a free summer camp for girls interested in firefighting and emergency services, a collaboration between the Cary, Apex, and Morrisville Fire Departments. Taught by a cadre of female firefighters from these departments, the camp offers hands-on activities like fire drills, first aid, and physical fitness training, while teaching teamwork, leadership, and community service. Participants gain knowledge in car wreck extractions, hose handling, tool and equipment use, EMS skills, and water rescues. This 5-day camp is designed for girls ages 14-18, providing an immersive experience that showcases a career in public safety through daily firefighting exercises and training, aimed at boosting self-confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills. Camp Ignite aims to inspire young women to consider a future in fire service, break down gender barriers in traditionally male-dominated professions, and foster confidence, skill-building, and camaraderie, giving participants a real sense of what it’s like to be a firefighter.
